WELCOME TO FLASHPOINT: SUPERGIRL ENTERS THE WORLD OF THE FLASH, ARROW AND THE LEGENDS

In the past couple of years viewers have been thrilled with some of the most entertaining DC comics based shows to ever hit television. Kicking off with Arrow in October 2012, the retinue expanded to include other increasingly popular shows like The Flash and most recently, Legends of Tomorrow which premiered in January 2016 on the CW network like the rest of the shows and thanks to several crossovers and subsequent spinoffs, we witnessed  before our very eyes the rise of a universe.

While DC comic has a lot of superheroes, one of the most endearing heroines has been The Maiden of Might more popularly known as Supergirl whose modern iteration debuted in her own show in October 2015 but on CBS, a different television network. For a while there it seemed this DC favourite would be effectively sidelined and marooned on a different timeline even as the DC television universe morphed into something we all came to enjoy and live for.

But then like the gift of sunshine on a rainy day, there came the collaboration between CBS and CW which spawned the Supergirl and The Flash crossover doing their thing before our thrilled eyes and hope reared its head again: there might still be a way for the maiden of might to make her way into the universe of our favourite make believe.

And it did happen.  As the first season wrapped up and the show was renewed for a second season, it was announced that Supergirl a.k.a the girl of steel  would be taking off from from CBS and landing in CW. Oh what joy! Just imagine all the endless possibilities of crossovers with Arrow, The Flash and the Legends of Tomorrow.

There were however questions. Plot questions dealing with timelines considering that the CW universe and CBS universe have been confirmed to be different timelines! We know she has the power of supersonic flight but how was the girl of steel going to manage it! No fears. The answer is in the twist.

With the way the second season of The Flash ended with Barry Allen speeding into the past to save his mother and then factor in the scoop (supplied by Grant Gustin, the actor who plays The Flash and tacitly confirmed by showrunner Greg Berlanti)  that Season 3 will be based off of the Flashpoint Paradox storyline, the very same epic event which reset the entire DC comicbookverse in 2011 to give us the New 52, and the puzzle pieces begin fall into place. It is obvious that Barry's boom into the past (and we know never to mess with the past) will set off some kind of time ripple which will be powerful enough to alter and re-align the two separate timelines and cause them to overlap, intertwine or merge or something like that. The long and short of it being, come this October, Supergirl will be meeting the rest of the family from the green hooded bow and arrow wielding vigilante to desperate trench coat wearing space quixoting time masters and the host of awesome characters in between.

The unfolding narrative was however missing an important element; one spoting black hair and decked in red and blue. His presence was constantly dangled before us like the tantalising aroma of a dish we would never get to taste as the Supergirl show constantly teased a sun obscured view of him in every opening sequence of every episode or a distant glimpse of him in flight and worse of all, behind the virtual translucent veil of modern day texting with Kara Zor El. Those did not really count and the question on all our minds was when is the Man of Steel going to make his grand entrance after all DC and the entire comic ecosystem was raised on his broad and capable shoulders! And then, more sweet news.

It was confirmed by less than no other but the show's very own Executive producer, Andrew Kreisberg, that the Last Son of Krypton will be featured in the first two episodes of the new season although not so much as the show remains primarily his cousin's turf.

Notwitstanding it did gladden our geeky hearts to know our favourite hero in red cape and blue spandex would be gracing our screens, the question of who would don the red cape soon had us in a twist with fan choices ranging from Dean Cain who played the part in Lois & Clark from 1993 to 1997 to Tom Welling in the beloved Smallville tales of Superman.

But now we know him and it is none of those two. It is Tyler Hoechlin from Richard Linklater's Everyone Wants Some! and Teen Wolf. A good choice too for he certainly has the looks and his talent in front of the camera has been tried, tested and 'thumbed up.' So he will be donning the red cape and showing face for the first time. However, considering how the Flash majorly screwed up things in the flashpoint paradox turning the timeline on its head and heroes became villains, some without powers and others like Superman severely weakened, we are not really sure what mode our heroes will be in. On that we can only guess and then guess some more.

After all said and done with all the uncertainty, what we do however expect, is an entertaining time as Supergirl and the rest of the gang come swinging back into action this fall. The Flash season 3 premieres on October 4, Arrow on October 5, Supergirl on the 10th and Legends of Tomorrow on October 13 all on CW.
